The EU urges 'respect' in response to Trump's threat of imposing 50% tariffs.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic warned that Europeans "stand ready to defend our interests

The EU stressed it wants a trade deal with the US based on “respect,” not “threats,” after President Trump warned of a 50% tariff on EU imports starting June 1. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said the bloc is committed to a fair agreement and ready to defend its interests.

Trump criticized slow negotiations, saying talks were “going nowhere,” and hinted tariffs could be delayed if a major European investment was made in the US. European leaders urged de-escalation but warned they are ready to respond.

The EU, a top US trading partner, exported over $600 billion to the US last year. In April, Trump announced a 20% tariff on EU goods, later delaying it while keeping a 10% base rate and a 25% tariff on EU steel and aluminum. The EU paused its own $20bn in tariffs and is considering more.

Markets fell after the threats, with the S&P 500 down 0.7% and EU indexes dropping over 1.5%.
